Day 1: We All Need Community


A spontaneous prayer meeting. Frequent text messages with encouraging scripture. A meal schedule that was filled for 6 months straight. A pink basket overflowing with handwritten cards.  A replaced air conditioning compressor.  Handmade blankets and quilts to keep me comfortable. A Hat and Scarf Party. House cleaning. Back rubs that helped alleviate intense nausea.  A team of 49 members to participate in the Race for the Cure.  Help with meals and baths for my kids on the nights that my husband worked late.  This is what community looks like.  At least this was what MY community looked like when I was delivered the devastating news that I had cancer.  I don’t know how we would have survived if we had not been served and loved so well by our friends.

    Bless you Kara and that beautiful community that surrounded you! What a wonderful way to start your journey!

    My current community is very different from what I was use to my entire life! The best community is my church family back home in MN. My community now in Mexico is very diverse! But usually the part I see daily consists of 4 dogs and their passerby friends that drop off samples and woodticks currently. Looking forward to your journey though I may not be able to pass by and leave a word of encouragement all 31 days, I will be following along!

    Kara, Love that you started with community. I found that through my journey with cancer, God expanded my community and He just brought out the best in everyone. I have many, many truly beautiful memories from the time with cancer. Most of them happened in the midst of all those people who loved me along the way.

    I look forward to reading more. You're off to a great start!
